Places to see

Cockermouth Cumbria

Cockermouth is a perfect base for visiting the West Lakes and fells, which have the advantage of being quieter than the Central Lakes, but are just as beautiful. Even so, the Lake District is small enough to tour all of it from Cockermouth.

Simonscales Mill is also only about eight miles to the Solway Coast, with its long stretches of sandy beach and wonderful sunsets. This is a superb place to walk dogs as, unlike some places, the beaches are not restricted.

The city of Carlisle is a drive of about 25 miles to the North East, and is well worth a visit. It boasts a fine Olde Castle, a delightful 14th century Cathedral and an excellent Museum. The city centre has been virtually re-built but still retains its original design. Hadrian's Wall, the old Roman wall, starts just North of Carlisle and runs up through the Border Country.

Cockermouth has a wealth of good Restaurants, Takeaways and Pubs serving bar meals. There are late-opening supermarkets within one mile of Simonscales Mill. The nearest train station is at Workington (8 miles West); Cockermouth is on the long-haul bus route from Whitehaven to London.
